Abstract

1283231 Treating blood V H HYDEN and F V HASSELBLAD 6 Aug 1969 [21 March 1969] 39373/69 Heading A5R Apparatus for selective enzymatic degradation of amino acids and/or proteins in blood comprises a passageway 14 having a blood inlet 11 and outlet 15, the interior of the passageway presenting an active surface in contact with blood passing through the passageway, the active surface being formed from a carrier bearing an enzyme, capable of degrading a selected amino acid and/or protein, and bearing an anticoagulant such as heparin. The carrier may be collagen, prepared with formaldehyde and phenol, or a polymer or copolymer. The passageway may be a helical tube 14, comprising an inner tube of the carrier and an outer protective casing, disposed in a liquid in a container 12 having heat insulated walls, the liquid in the carrier being maintained at about blood temperature by means including a thermostat 13. A blood pump 4 may be utilised if necessary. The helix 14 may be replaced by a plurality of parallel connected circuits. The passageway may alternatively comprise a closed chamber (21) Figure 3, 5, (not shown), the carrier comprising one or more planar or folded sheets, a plurality of co-axial tubes, a spiral roll (28), Fig. 6 (not shown), a folded spiral (29) with a flat support spiral (30), Figure 8, (not shown), a folded membrane having a star-shaped cross-section, a permeable filter-like body in the form of fibrous material manufactured to conform to the chamber (21), or a slug of open cellular structure. In a further embodiment the passageway forms part of a diaphragm blood pump, the active surface being fixed to the pump diaphragm.
