Abstract

1283040 Sensing direction of movement THORN BENDIX Ltd 9 Dec 1969 [10 Dec 1968] 58646/68 Heading G4H A shutter of known dimension in the direction of its movement and mechanically coupled to move in either direction along a line in synchronism with a moving object, passes between a light source and a detector to produce signals which differ according to its direction of movement, the shutter having a light transmitting aperture nearer to one edge than the other. The direction of movement is indicated by an output on terminal L or K, Fig. 4, by the action of bistable elements 32, 29, the latter of which is switched to its right-hand state by the output from a differentiating "AND" gate 28 when the differentiated signal from the second edge 22 of the shutter aperture occurs when monostable 34 is in its switched condition as a result of the passage of the leading edge. The invention is described with reference to a knitting machine and the signals are used to start and stop a device whereby the amount of wool used in knitting an area indicated by the shutter dimension is determined.
