The hairiness of a textile (or other) yarn is measured by moving the yarn lengthwise so that an image or shadow of it passes over a photo-cell, protruding hairs producing pulses which are counted. The position of the photocell transverse to the direction of movement of the yarn is adjustable so that only hairs protruding by more than a selected distance are counted.
