Abstract
1282921 Direct arc furnaces ISHIKAWAJIMA-HARIMA JUKOGYO KK 31 July 1969 38544/69 Heading H5H A three-phase A.C. direct arc furnace has electrode-supporting masts 4, 5, located on the same side of the furnace and obliquely extending electrodes 2, 3, arranged so that their tips are spaced around a circle of diameter D in the upper part of the furnace but move closer to a circle of diameter d when lowered to the position for melting metal scrap 7 close to the surface of the bath 8 of melted charge. The circles D, d, may be coaxial or otherwise. The secondary conductors, comprising flexible cables and bushes upon the electrode supporting arms 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP>, have correspondingly larger mutual distances with the electrodes 2, 3 in their raised positions than with the electrodes lowered, giving high and low furnace circuit impedances respectively to help stabilize the arcs, give uniform melting and prevent flicker in the raised position, and to increase the rapidity of heating in the lowered position, without excessive breakage of the furnace wall refractory lining by hot spot phenomenon.
