1282775 Production of terephthalic acid JAPAN GAS CHEMICAL CO Inc 27 Aug 1969 [28 Aug 1968 (2)] 42755/69 Heading C2C Terephthalic acid is prepared by oxidizing p-toluic acid in the liquid phase with a gas containing free molecular oxygen in the presence of a catalytic amount of a cobalt salt, the reaction being carried out in the simultaneous presence of p-tolualdehyde and per-p-toluic acid, the p-tolualdehyde being added step-wise to the reaction mixture in quantities such that 0À1 to 0À5 g. thereof is always present per gram to p-toluic acid whereby sufficient per-p-toluic acid is produced from the p-tolualdehyde to maintain the cobalt ions of said salt in the trivalent state and, in turn prevent the p-tolualdehyde present from reducing the cobalt ions to the divalent state. In a preferred embodiment, the reaction in which the per-p-toluic acid is decomposed to liberate active oxygen and yield p-toluic acid which is used in the process of the invention, is coupled with a reaction requiring active oxygen, e.g. the oxidation of olefinic compounds and alicyclic ketones into epoxy compounds and lactones respectively.
