Abstract
1282592 Linear C 6-8 olefins BP CHEMICALS Ltd 21 April 1970 [13 June 1969] 30028/69 Heading C5E Linear C 6-8 olefins are produced by the following sequence of steps:- (a) codimerizing ethylene and propylene in the presence of a catalyst prepared by dispersing Na and/or Li on an anhydrous potassium compound to form a product containing pentene-1; (b) partially isomerizing the step (a) product to form a mixture containing pentane-1 and pentene-2; (c) fractionating the step (b) product to recover a C 5 fraction containing pentane-1 and pentene-2; (d) catalytically co-disproportionating the step (c) product; and (e) fractionating the stage (d) product to recover C 6-8 linear olefins. The fractionation steps (c) and (e) may be conducted in the same vessel if desired. Suitable isomerization catalysts in step (b) include alumina, silica/alumina, natural clays, supported phosphoric acid, heteropolyacids and sulphided nickel-on-sepiolite. A suitable disproportional tion catalyst in step (d) is rhenium heptoxide on gamma-alumina derived from beohmite. The step (a) catalyst may be hydrided and activated, and the step (d) catalyst may also be activated.
