Abstract

1282510 Carbon black/nitrile rubber masterbatches BP CHEMICALS Ltd 19 April 1971 [30 Oct 1969] 53127/69 Heading C3P Carbon black/nitrile rubber masterbatches are prepared by blending an aqueous nitrile rubber latex with an aqueous carbon black slurry, coagulating the blend, e.g. using CaCl 2 , and drying the coagulated blend by an extrusion process. Prior to drying the coagulate is separated from the aqueous phase and washed with water to remove soaps &c. The extruder used is preferably one having a compound screw with a first conical section and a second straight section passing through vacuum chambers. In the Example, a masterbatch prepared as above is blended with additional nitrile rubber, a mixed alcohol phthalate plasticizer and conventional curing agents, and compared with similar blends prepared either without masterbatching or with masterbatching using oven drying.
