Abstract

1282422 Polyesters IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 11 Feb 1970 [12 Dec 1968] 59088/68 Heading C3R Polyesters of low acid number are made by heating an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, alone or in admixture with other carboxylic acids, with an aliphatic diol, in proportions to give an OH: COOH ratio of between 1À0:1 and 1À1:1, in the presence of a stannous salt of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid in an amount to provide less than 55 p.p.m. of tin in the total reaction mixture. The reaction mixture may also include aromatic dicarboxylic acids, aliphatic diamines or aminoalcohols, monohydric alcohols, monobasic carboxylic acids and polyhydric alcohols. In examples, stannous octoate is used as a catalyst in the polycondensation of (1) adipic acid, propylene glycol and coconut oil fatty acid; (2) ethylene glycol, propylene glycol and adipic acid and (3) ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol and adipic acid.
