Suction cups 8 3 , 8 4 , 8 5 may be movable with respect to the frame 9 rotationally via motor (11), Fig. 2 (not shown), vertically via motor (10) and horizontally via motor (12), Fig. 3 (not shown), whilst cups 8 2 , 8 6 , 8 7 , 8 8 are movable only vertically. In operation cup 8 1 descends, grips a cathode and then rises to separate the cathode from a pile on pan 2. Frame 9 is then moved to the left, the cathode is deposited on a table 3 and frame 9 is returned. Movable and stationary plates 18, 19 at right angles to each other in a horizontal plane register the cathode into position and cup 8 2 then descends, picks up the cathode and is reciprocated on frame 9 to the 8 3 position where one edge is trimmed by a guillotine 4, the following cathode being transported from the pile to the table 3. Cup 8 3 then descends, grips the cathode and orients it by rotating through 90 degrees and moving in a horizontal direction; then, upon a further reciprocation of frame 9, deposits it at the 8 4 position for trimming of another of its edges. The same happens at the 8 5 position. Suction cup 8 5 orients the cathode for trimming at the 8 8 position by a guillotine 6, the cathode being transported there by cups 8 6 and 8 7 . Cup 8 8 moves the trimmed cathode to a position where it is registered by a pusher against a stop and cut in half by guillotine 6, the halves being fed by a pusher 17 on frame 9 to a roller table 13, each half being held in a rotatable four blade gripper device 14 where they are examined prior to delivery via table 15 to a bin 16 or processing line.
