Abstract

1281646 Supply device for a heart stimulator PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 May 1970 [13 May 1969] 22362/70 Heading A5R A supply device for an intracorporal heart stimulator comprises a sealed casing within which is disposed an oscillatary rotor in the field of a magnet and means for transmitting to said rotor the movement of the heart, which means comprise a rotatable member coaxial with said rotor, a rotatable vane coupled with the rotatable member, and means for controlling the oscillatory displacement of the vane in accordance with the movements of the heart. As shown the airtight casing 1 accommodates an annular magnetic circuit 2a associated with a winding 2b and having an air gap accommodating a permanent-magnet rotor 3 which is magnetised in a direction at right angles to its axis of rotation. Two auxiliary magnets 4 produce a return magnetic-couple for the rotor. A rotatable member 7 on the rotor is provided with teeth which mesh with the gear wheel 9 associated with a rotatable vane 11. The space within the cylinder 12 enclosing the vane 11 is divided into two pairs of equalvolume chambers (13a, 13b and 14a, 14b) Fig. 2 (not shown), in such a way that the volumes of one pair vary in a complementary manner to the volumes of the other pair in accordance with the rotation of the vane 11. The pair of chambers (13a, 13b) are connected to a plastic bag (18), Fig. 3 (not shown), arranged at the tip of the heart (17), and the pair of chambers (14a, 14b) are connected by a flexible tube 16 to an elastic bag (19) forming an expansion chamber. Initially the bag (18) is filled with liquid and at each systole the bag (18) is compressed between the tip of the heart and the surrounding tissues, thus expelling the liquid along the tube (15) into the chambers (13a 13b) then into the chambers (14a, 14b) and into the tube 16 towards the elastic bag (19), the vane 11, and therefore the rotor 3, being caused to perform an oscillating movement. The winding 2b of the magnetic circuit 2a is connected to the terminals of a capacitor (not shown), so that a tuned oscillatory circuit is formed. An electric switch and a stimulator (not shown) may be accommodated inside the casing 1, one of the electrodes for transmitting the pulses of the stimulator may be formed by the casing 1, the other electrode may be fixed to the flexible bag (18) if the liquid is conductive. The vane 11 may be made of magnetic material and associated with two external symmetrical magnets 10 obviating the use of a shaft passing through the cylinder wall.
