Abstract
1,119,336. Electrostatic machines. CENTRE NATIONAL DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE. 20 Jan., 1966 [22 Jan., 1965 (2)], No. 2691/66. Heading H2A. An electrostatic generator of the conducting or insulating charge-carrier type is filled with a liquid dielectric 6 which is purified by the use of semi-permeable membranes between the dielectric and the electrode, whereby contaminant ions in the dielectric liquid are driven by the working field through the membranes and remain trapped in the cavity behind it. Different membranes are used to trap ions and cations. The stator carries membranes 8, 10, 12, 14 forming chambers 16, 18, 20, 22 in which the electrodes 44, 46, 48, 50 are located. Similarly, the rotor carries membranes 28, 30, 32, 34 containing electrodes 52, 54, 56 ,58 connected to contact segments 68, 70, 72, 74 in the usual way. The chambers and the working space are filled with a polar liquid. The migration of contaminant to the enclosed chambers, renders these and the membranes conductive. It is described (Fig. 2, not shown) how the spaces between the ends of the chambers may be filled to produce a smooth profile, and stator and rotor may be reversed. If desired (Fig. 4, not shown) only one member may have the membranes. The outer rotor charge-carrying plates may be secured to the outside of an insulating shell (Fig. 4) and as a modification of this arrangement (Fig. 5, not shown) the plates may be omitted to form an insulating charge-carrier type machine whose rotor is fed by ionizing electrodes (228, 230, 232, 234) in the usual way. The machine may act as a motor, and electronic commutation may be employed. Suitable polar liquids are nitrobenzene, nitrotoluene, nitromethane, ethyl alcohol, acetone and acetonitrile, and the liquid in the ion-trapping chambers may be different, e.g. a solution.
