Abstract

1281599 Detecting objects photo-electrically CORNING GLASS WORKS 9 Oct 1969 [9 Oct 1969] 49564/69 Heading G1A An object detection system comprises a light source 14<SP>1</SP> and a photo-resistive detector 12<SP>1</SP> on opposite sides of a detection zone, a resistor 11<SP>1</SP> in series with the detector, a utilization device 19<SP>1</SP> (such as a counter) responsive (e. g, via an A.C. amplifier 18<SP>1</SP>) to rapid changes in the detector output and a feedback patch (e.g. via a D.C. amplifier 20) responsive to slow variations in the detector output to control the intensity of the light source so as to maintain the average detector output at a constant level. The system described is used for the detection of lime glass blocks which only alternate the light by about 8%. The feedback responds to changes in ambient conditions (ambient light, temperature and humidity) maintaining the operation of the detector at the same point on its characteristic. A suitable balanced D.C. transistor differential amplifier with Zener diode voltage stabilization is detailed, Fig.4 (not shown).
