Abstract
1281583 Moulding polymeric insulators BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd 2 July 1969 33477/69 Heading B5A [Also in Division H2] A polymeric electric insulator sleeve (see Division H2) comprises sintered particles of polytetrafluoroethylene, or neoprene, butyl or silicone rubber, which rubbers may be filled with hydrated alumina, or mica and hydrated silica fillers, moulded by compression of the particles by a gas or liquid inflated core 6 within a mould 4, the interior cavity wall whereof comprises at least one helical groove 4a, or a plurality of spaced annular grooves. In the Fig. 2 embodiment the inflatable core 6 is supported upon a mandrel 5, similarly helically configured to the mould interior cavity wall and through passages 5a, 5b whereof the inflating fluid is admitted, the core 6, mandrel 5, and mould 4 being removed from the moulded sleeve by unscrewing. After etching the interior of the sintered sleeve with sodium - naphthalene - tetra - hydro - furan, a preformed resin rod 2, which may be reinforced with glass in other inorganic fibre, is located therewithin and bonded thereto by liquid hardenable resin introduced by vacuum. In the Fig. 5 embodiment, the sleeve 10 is moulded with spaced circumferential ribs 11 using an inflatable core which is either removed after moulding, or may remain in position to be volatilized during the sintering. The interior of the sintered sleeve is filled under vacuum with hardenable resin 15 in which metal terminals 8 are embedded. It is stated that the preformed resin core bonded within the sleeve may be tubular, or the sleeve may include an elongated metal conductor bonded therein by resin.
