As shown, Fig. 1, nuts N from shoot 41 are transferred to stations 2 ... 8 where they are discharged to an accept shoot 40. Eddy current flaw detectors 20, 20<SP>1</SP> inspect the bottom and top faces at stations 2 and 6, and mechanical/ pneumatic plug gauges inspect the screwthread at station 4, to control electro-pneumatically actuated traps at stations 3, 5, 7 which allow nuts to fall into reject shoots, on transfer and after detection of a defect.
