Abstract
1281382 Propelling aircraft and air cushion vehicles; propelling ships and vehicles; sledges KEICKMANN 14 July 1969 28074/69 Headings B7G B7H B7K and B7V A vehicle such as an aircraft, boat, air-cushion vehicle, road vehicle or sledge is propelled by symmetrically disposed propellers 112, 118 which are driven by hydraulic motors 108, 114 supplied from a pump 124 driven by an I.C. engine 122 and having control means 126 to regulate the rate of flow from the pump. The pump 122 is a radial cylinder pump with two hydraulically independent groups of cylinders, each group being connected by hydraulic fluid conduits to corresponding hydraulic motors 108, 114 respectively; the contol member 126 is provided to vary the eccentricity of the pump cylinders and thus tne rate of flow of hydraulic fluid to the motors. Engine and transmission arrangements with one engine and pump and one pair of propellers, and with two engines and pumps and two pairs of propellers are described with reference to Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) respectively. The invention is described as applied also to a four propeller aeroplane, Figs. 3, 16 (not shown). Other embodiments are described for an air-cushion vehicle in which hydraulic transmissions are used also for the cushion fans, Figs. 12a, 12b (not shown); an hydroplane, Fig. 6, with hydrofoils 906, 908, 910, 912 fitted with hydraulically driven propellers 938 supplied from a pair of pumps 920, 922 connected in parallel and driven by I.C. engines 924, 926; boats and ships, Figs. 10, 11a, 11b, 14, 15 (not shown). In another embodiment, Fig. 7, a wheeled road vehicle is driven by propellers 1023 mounted in tunnels 1008, 1010 and driven by hydraulic motors 1018, 1020 supplied by a pump 1016. Another embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), is for a propeller driven sledge.
