Abstract

1281337 Brake actuators CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO Ltd 1 Aug 1969 [16 Aug 1968] 39350/68 Heading F2F In a brake actuator having two coaxial pistons 4, 5 in abutment within a housing 1 when the brakes are in an "off position", the brakes are normally operated through a push rod 10 when hydraulic fluid from a service line is supplied through a port 6 to actuate piston 5, piston 4 being maintained in abutment with the end face of the housing, and the brakes are held locked by a locking mechanism when pistons 4, 5 are both actuated pressure fluid being supplied from a parking line through a 7 to act on piston 4. The locking mechanism comprises a spring-loaded arrangement of balls or rollers 11 engaging a wedge 12, hydraulic control pressure, which is normally supplied via a port 15 to a thrust plate 14 moving balls 11 against a spring 13. Piston 4 may be hollow and engage two ring seals 8 communicating via a port 9 with a reservoir so that leakage past either port results in pressure loss in only one of either the service or parking lines. In a further embodiment the piston 4 is solid and has a single ring seal and a face seal on the working face of the piston which engages a seat arranged around port 7 in the normal braking position.
