1373289 Spring brake actuators CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO Ltd 4 May 1973 [26 May 1972] 25005/72 Heading F2F A spring brake actuator comprises two aligned hydraulic cylinders 5, 6 in one, 6, of which is a piston 7 connected to brake linkage 8, and in the second, 5, of which is a further piston 11 which abuts piston 7, there being a port and conduit connection 13 to cylinder 5 from the hydraulic brake circuit which normally holds piston 11 in an inoperative position against the bias of a spring 17, and a port and conduit connection 10 from a service line to the cylinder 6 so that when pressure is admitted to the latter cylinder it acts on pistons 11, 6 in opposite directions ensuring that a compound thrust from the two pistons cannot be exerted on the brake linkage. Spring 17 acts through a spring seat 16, sleeve 15, and a rod 14 threaded to the sleeve to apply the brake if the pressure in the hydraulic circuit fails. To release the spring applied brake rod 14 is provided with a bolt head 14a to rotate the rod and permit piston 11 to move rearwardly. Alternatively a washer abutting an end-plate 22 is inserted beneath the bolt head which is then rotated to withdraw the rod and spring seat. Bearing rings 18, 20 serve to locate the spring seat 16 against tilting and binding.
