Abstract
1281166 Plasma gun ASSOCIATED ENG Ltd 3 Dec 1969 [12 Dec 1968] 59245/68 Heading H5H A plasma gun electrode assembly comprises a nozzle electrode 1 separated from a rod cathode 2 by an insulator 5, the parts 1, 2 and 5 being secured together by screws or bolts 6a, 6b extending parallel to the nozzle axis. The electrode 1 is made of copper and is secured to a copper carrier 1a, and the electrode 2 which comprises a thoriated tungsten tip 20 brazed to a threaded copper stud 21 is secured to a copper carrier 3. An asbestos composition heat shield 11 surrounds electrode tip 20 to protect insulator 5 which is made of epoxy resin. A replaceable copper tube 8 lines the nozzle orifice 4 and is secured to the electrode 1 by screws 9, a key 10 ensuring that a lateral hole 8a is aligned with a powder passage 14 in electrode 1. Hollows upply leads 12, 13 provide a coolant flow through passages 7. The carrier 1a may be omitted and the parts 1, 2, 5 secured together by a single set of nylon screws instead of two sets of screws 6a, 6b as shown. The gun may be used for welding, spraying or hole drilling.
