Abstract

1280773 Insulated chimneys A WILBS 2 Feb 1970 [31 Jan 1969] 4970/70 Heading F4J A chimney casing surrounding a chimney S consists of a plurality of prefabricated box-like, and thin-walled interlocking hollow members having a layer of thermal insulation 26 on their inner sides, the uppermost member 21 being connected to the chimney whilst the intermediate members of the casing are supported by the lowermost member 20. The latter rests on a frame 10 attached to the chimney by screws 14 extending through frame members 12 and entering the chimney at 19. A similar frame 60 clamps the uppermost member 21 to the chimney, this frame being formed with lugs 62 carrying threaded studs 64 receiving either a chimney cover 70 or a cowl 80. Each member 20, 21 has an outer wall 28 with upper chamfered portions 32, 34, an upper support shoulder 36 and a vertical stub 38, the lower portion being formed with a projection 24 having a draining opening 25 and a bearing shoulder 30. A flashing 40 comprises a sleeve 46 formed with a flange 44 fastened to roof battens D and a further flange 42 extending over the roof covering A. A further sealing member 50 shaped like the top of members 20, 21 is disposed between two such members and fits over the flashing 40 to complete the seal. The members 20, 21, flashing 40 and sealing member 50 may be made of aluminium, aluminium alloy, galvanized steel sheet or a plastics material. In a modification (Fig. 3) the co-operating surfaces of the prefabricated members comprise right angled steps. The cowl 80, Fig. 4, comprises a rectangular frame 82 with corner supports 84, a flexible cover 86 attached by a pivot bearing 88 to two of the supports and having a clip 92 engaging a projection 90 on the other two supports. The cowl is lined with an insulating panel 94 engaging clips 96 and 100. In a modification (Figs. 8-12) the cover is a flat plate (186) pivotally mounted on two supports and attached to the others either by cottar pins or bayonet clips.
