ApplicationNovember 3, 1950, Serial No. 193,897
" The present'lnvention relates to skylightsand isadaptable for most any type 'offskylight of whatever nature or description." The skylight of the present invention is particularly easy to install, can be readily formed to fit anyvshape or size of skylight'opening, is comparatively inexpensive, and is durable and Strong. c r
'The present invention preferably uses a transparent or translucent, plastic material in place of the usual glassmember and one of the chief features of the invention is that the plastic element is formedtofitthe frame which is mounted on the skylight opening.
The invention can be'applied quite as readily tOfTlBW building constructions as to old, and is easily adaptableforall sizes and shapes of skylight openings. Further it is extremely strong be-, cause oflits'construction and is completely waterproof without the addition or the using of waterproof compounds after thefskylight has been installed.
The present invention will be more. ful1y.un-
derstood from the description in thespecification annexed hereto when' taken in connection with the drawings illustrating anembodiment of the a in which:
Figure 1 shows ,a Wbrok n. section in elevation through the skylight and 1 In the arrangement indicated inFigurepLsthe invention is shown in connection, with j a "frame opening whichemploys wooden beams but it maybe applied to'frame openings of other materials'. Figure 1 shows sectional beams I and 2 and the none-sectioned beam 3v forming the skylight opening. .These beams arercovered over the top and sides .both .ins'ideand out by a metal channel member 4 made of galvanized sheet metal, other metal elements or other materials sufficiently durable to withstand weather and strong enough to act as a support for the skylight covering element. The channel member t has a cross section which provides a wall 5 on the outside of the wooden frame, a covering web 6 on the top edge or sill of the Wooden frame and an inner wall element ,1 inside of the wooden frame which extends both downward into the skylight opening and upwards providing the upwardly extending flange 8. In addition to this the element 4 has an outwardly extending flange member 9 which may be continuous with the top plate or covering 6 of the edge of the beam either in a horizontal or ina downwardly sloping direction. Within the outer wall section 5, a base 5 Claims; o1. 10s1 flashing iii maybe includedwhich extends upward to the top cover section 6. Covering the external flange member 9 may be a gasket H l and over this is fitted a plastic dome i2 which has a horizontal flange l3 resting securely around' the whole flange 9 andgasket H. .The cover is secured and held in place by means .of a'series of bolts i5 extending from the top 'of the plastic flange through holes 15' in the plastic aligned with corresponding holes in the metal, through which the bolts pass. These bolts are capped tightly by the nut It on the inside of the flange 9 The bolts may fit closely in the metal flange but the holes IS in the plastic are largeenough.
to allowlee-way for expansion and movement of the bolts IS in the holes; A gasket 34 maybe used under the bolt head or a complete gasket may be cemented to the top of the plastic flange [3. large size washer ll should be placed beneath the head of the screw Hover the gasket M. The plastic skylight itself may be formed-of various thicknesses of material. For a 30", sky1ight,' a I;
cle ar'fPlexi'glas" is satisfactory. The dome is preferably molded, formed or blown to size in anysuitable; and well-known manner. I
It will be ,noted -from the'drawingof Figur l that the covering gasket I I is open at the corners in the region l8,cbut the fia'tsufiace 6 of the topchannel covering the skylight frame is mi tered and fitted at a,45 angle and these edges "are" solclered together along their whole length so that no water will get beneath "them. By cutui the gasket away at the square corner 'section any moisture or waterwhich' might gather under the corners will readily flow out, For this purpose the corners imay'slightly slope for drainagelpur poses The fiangetextends upwards from'the top of; p the horizontal surface 6 providing a gutter-like may be held to the frame of the skylight in any I suitable manner as by screws 20 applied through the inside lower section of the inner wall 1.
In the arrangement of Figure 1, if the base flashing i0 is carried over on top of the skylight sill, the outer wall 5 may be replaced by a few dependent sections overlying the flashing I or even these dependent sections of the wall 5 may be omitted where the sections of the whole metal frame structure are joined as a substantially integral rigid frame. In this latter construction the inner dependent walls I which may also be replaced by a number of downwardly dependent fingers will lock the whole frame in place and thereby prevent any sidewise displacement.
It will alsobe noted that where the flange l3 of the domeis. tightly held to the outwardly extend-- ing flange 9 by means of the gasket ll so as to make a water-tight joint, the upwardly extending wall section 8 may be omitted.
While these various changes may beemplo'yed with good results, the specific construction pre vlously described and shown in the drawings is the preferred form.
Having now described my invention, Iclaimr.
1. A covering for a sky light opening having a sill framing the sky light opening, a metallic frame extending all-around the sill on the top, edge thereof with an outwardly projecting flange all around the sky light opening, means extending downwardly from the inner edge of the frame for securing the metallic frame to said sill, a plastic "'dome' member having a'base flange coextensive with 'said'ou'twardl'y' projecting metallic flangeall aro'und'the' sky light opening, and means'for clamping said flanges together includinga'plurali'ty of 'spacedboltsjfpassing through aligned holes 'in'the flange of the plastic dome and'saidmetal flange," the holes'ini the plastic dome, being slightly larger in diameter, than the bolts whichfpa'ss'through them, providing fitting and. expansion tolerances.
2. A skylight construction for afbuilding opening having airaised sill about the'periphery of.
said opening, eomprising a covering'frame' for saidi'sill having a downwardly extending flange about the outer side ofv the sill and an upwardly extending flange of' said covering frame at its tingItdthe-outwardly extending flange, means-se curing, said. cover at its marginal flange, to theoutwardly extending flange and means securing said cov'ering frame to the. sill.
