Abstract

1280691 Drying thread COMPAGNIE DE SAINT-GOBAIN-PONT-A-MOUSSON 8 July 1969 [8 July 1968] 34287/69 Heading F4Q Moist threads, e.g. glass threads, are dried during winding on to a rotating bobbin by radiant heat directed at the turns of thread. As shown filaments 2 leaving a spinning die 1 pass through sizing device 6, are formed into thread 3 and dried by infra-red radiator 5 while being wound on to bobbin 4. The irradiation is preferably controlled so that the threads have a desired residual moisture content by adjusting the distance or power output of the heater. The heater may have a slot parallel to the bobbin axis so that only the circumferential surface is heated. The heater may be mounted on the ring rail in the case of a vertical bobbin (Fig. 2 not shown). Thread being wound off one bobbin on to another may also be heat irradiated as it is being wound off (Fig. 3, not shown).
