Abstract
1280473 Detecting presence of hot objects STEWARTS & LLOYDS Ltd 1 July 1969 [4 July 1968 2 June 1969] 32039/68 and 27900/69 Heading G1A Specification describes apparatus for detecting the presence and the position of hot steel bars 12 Fig. 1 on a conveyer 16 and comprising two infrared diode detectors 17, 18 which, by means of rotating mirrors 8, simultaneously scan across the conveyer in two parallel paths 10, 11. A bar at position (i) will give an output only from detector 18, one at position (ii) will give outputs from both detectors, and one at position (iii) will give an output only from detector 17. If only the trailing edge of a bar (i.e. position (i)) is to be detected, the case of a pulse output from detector 18 only may be detected by logic circuit 15. Apertures 2 and 3 in front of the detectors do not laterally define the scanning areas with great precision and to overcome this, the detector outputs may be gated by means of signals produced by a chopper 22, Fig. 3 interrupting the infrared radiation from source 23 to detector 24, the shutter rotating synchronously with mirror 8.
