Abstract

1280463 Drawing glass fibres POST OFFICE 2 July 1969 [24 Sept 1968] 45298/68 Heading C1M [Also in Division F4] In a vertically mounted glass fibre drawing furnace 3 the formation of convection currents, due to the escape of hot gases from the top of the furnace at the entry point of a glass rod 8, is eliminated by the provision of a cylindrical head 1 which surrounds the rod 8 and is supplied with a control gas through a horizontal inlet tube 9. The flow of control gas which is downwards, counterbalances the upward flow of hot gases. The flow rate of the gas is adjusted in dependence of the temperature indicated by a thermocouple located in the hot zone of the furnace, the thermocouple giving a maximum reading when the condition of balance is achieved. The type of gas fed to the head is chosen to provide a suitable atmosphere in the hot zone of the furnace. The head is positioned to cover the exit 5 of the central furnace tube 4. The diameter of the glass rod 8 is slightly less than that of the aperture 6 and surrounding sleeve 7 thereby providing a high resistance to gas flow from the interior of the head 1 to the external atmosphere.
