Abstract
1,126,609. Spinneret. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 19 July, 1967 [20 July, 1966], No. 33219/67. Heading C1M. [Also in Divisions B3 and B5] A spinneret for producing melt-spun filaments comprises: a face plate having at least one hole; an insert fitting into the hole and having at least one orifice, which may be of any cross-section or length; means to locate the insert horizontally and vertically in the hole; and a seal bonding the insert to the face plate. The face plate and insert may be of stainless steel, or the insert may be of glass or a ceramic material. The sealing compound may be glass, silver, silver solder, or aluminium sodium silicate, the melting point of the sealing compound being below that of the face plate or insert. In Fig. 1 a spinneret face plate 1 has a stepped hole 2. An insert 3 has an orifice 4, and is held in the horizontal position by its smaller diameter section 5, which fits into the minor bore hole 6. The insert is held in the vertical position by a shoulder 9 resting on a step 8 of the face plate. The larger diameter section 10 of the insert is smaller than the upper major bore 7, leaving an annular space 11, into which is introduced a suitable sealing compound such as a suspension of glass frit in water. Entry of the sealing compound into the orifice may be prevented by coating the top face 13 of the insert with a low melting sealing compound such as paraffin wax. Water from the suspension of frit is then evaporated and the assembly fired to fuse the frit and burn off the paraffin wax. The inserts may be easily removed from the bore by heating the assembly until the sealing compound melts.
