Abstract
1280453 Tubular heat exchangers UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE 30 June 1969 [24 June 1968] 29979/68 Heading F4S A heat exchange unit U comprises a plurality of helically wound tubes 1 extending between common inlet and outlet headers 2, 3, the envelope containing the tubes being of rectangular or elliptical cross-section (see Fig. 2) thus defining a panel shaped unit. A plurality of such units are disposed within a cylindrical pressure shell (6, Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) around a central return pipe (4) fed from a common cylindrical header (5). In a modification (Figs. 8, 9, not shown) the straight lengths (P 1 ) of the helical tubes lie within and pass through the wall of the shell while the return bends (P 2 ) joining adjacent straight lengths are located outside the shell. The shell in this case serves to support the tubes. The unit U may comprise a series of interwoven helical tubes (Fig. 10, not shown) interconnecting transverse inlet and outlet headers (2, 3). In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown) the inlet and outlet headers (L I , L O ) extend longitudinally down either side of the heat exchange unit forming supports for the tubes. The panel shaped units U may be curved in one or two planes (Fig. 12, not shown).
