Abstract
1280448 Glass composition CARL-ZEISSSTIFTUNG [trading as JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN] 9 Dec 1970 [12 Dec 1969] 58458/70 Heading C1M An optical glass has the percentage weight composition SiO 2 20-48, Na 2 O + K 2 O 7-32, TiO 2 + WO 3 30-44, WO 3 0-9, F 0À65-7À2, B 2 O 3 0-9, PbO 0-17, Al 2 O 3 0-5, Sb 2 O 3 0-5 and MgO + CaO + SrO + BaO + ZnO 0-5. The fluorine content is provided by 2-22 KF or 1-10 AlF 3 . The glass is produced in a process in which an oxidizing agent is present to reduce colour formation. The oxidizing agent may be an arsenate, oxygen or an oxidizing gas. In a preferred example the glass forming batch is melted at 1230‹ C. and refined for 1 hour at 1260‹ C. and cast at 1120‹ C. The glass is then transferred to a cooling furnace maintained at 480‹ C., kept for 1 hour at this temperature and then cooled at a rate of 7‹ C./hour to room temperature. Such glass a has an expansion coefficient of 116À3 x 10<SP>-7</SP> ‹C<SP>-1</SP>.
