Abstract

1280198 Seaming EASTMAN KODAK CO 18 Dec 1969 [23 Dec 1968] 61758/69 Heading B5K [Also in Division G2] Two lengths 17 and 19 of thermoplastic film are joined together by means of an intermediate piece 21 having a surface portion of a thermoplastic resin, the sealing being carried out by the application of ultrasonic energy. As shown, the operation is performed on an anvil 11 having a transverse gap 13 and a longitudinal channel in which the film strips can be laid. The top surface of the anvil may be horizontal immediately adjacent the edges of the gap 13 (as at 11a and 11b), and then slope downwards (as at 11c and 11d), which improves the strength of the join. The ultrasonic energy is fed to a horn 23 having a planar surface which is lowered until it is in contact with the films to be joined. Two knives (63, 64, Fig. 6, not shown) may be provided to trim the ends of the film strips flush with the sides of the gap. The intermediate tape 21 may have a laminated construction of kraft paper and a thermoplastic resin. When the film is a photographic film, the intermediate tape is caused to adhere to the film base itself, and not merely the antihalation layer or the photographic emulsion layer.
