[Also in Division B8] Laminating.-In making a collapsible tube a web 30, Fig. 5, of a foil of metal such as aluminium, paper or cellulosic material, which may be printed at 32, is bonded by pressure rollers 38 to webs 36 of plastics material supplied from extrusion devices 34, the laminate being formed into a tube (see below). The web 36 forming the inner layer of the tube is a copolymer of an olefine and a monomer which may be an ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid; the outer layer may be of paper, a low density polythene, or it may be the same as the inner layer. The foil layer may be heated before the plastics layers are applied. The outer plastics layer may be omitted, or the layers may number more than three: e.g. a four-ply laminate consisting of a polyolefine, foil, paper and a copolymer; or the position of the foil and paper in this laminate may be reversed. Adhesives may be used between the layers. Moulding.-A head portion 212, Fig. 14, is formed on the collapsible tube by injection moulding, a laminated collar 229 being placed freely in the mould before the plastics material is injected. The collar 229, which is formed of a metallic foil between layers of thermoplastics, is centred within the bead portion by the pressure of the injected plastics material. The head portion 12 may, alternatively, be joined to the tube by compression moulding or by heat-sealing. Seaming.-After the web material is laminated, and partially cut by knives 43, Fig. 5, it is formed into tubular shape on a mandrel 50 and longitudinally seamed. The outer, plastics, layers of the laminate extend beyond the foil layer, Fig. 8. A tape sealer or gas heater 52, operates on the web edges which are then pressed between the mandrel and a roller 53 to form the seam, as in Fig. 9.
