Abstract

1280081 Convector space heater; unit heaters C R KENNEDY 19 May 1970 24202/70 Headings F4S and F4V [Also in Division H5] A heat radiating unit intended for use in a convector space heater, comprises a bank of externally-finned, vertically-spaced, series-connected liquid-filled tubes 14, all the tubes being inclined with adjacent tubes diverging from one another, a tube 10 containing an electric heating element 24 being connected to the lowest of the tubes 14, and an enclosed fluid circuit through the unit being completed by a return tube 34 interconnecting the tube 10 with the uppermost of the tubes 14. The unit also includes an expansion tube 12 and a thermostat 40 responsive the liquid temperature in the tubes. The tube 10 may be inclined as shown or vertical (Fig. 4). The heating element 24 preferably comprises a readily replacable electric resistance element supplied with current through conducting wires 28. In use, and as shown, the unit is arranged in a casing through which air from adjacent the ceiling is forced by a fan 56 through a duct 54 containing an interchangeable filter 64, downwardly to a heated-air outlet 52 at floor level. A room thermostat T controls stopping and starting of the fan and simultaneously actuates means (e.g. solenoid or motor) for positioning a valve plate 60 so that when the fan stops, the fan-air duct 54 is closed by the valve and an opening 58 in the upper region of the casing is uncovered whereby air can then flow through the casing by natural convection. The casing may be open at the back and a reflective sheet of aluminium foil placed against the wall behind the unit.
