Abstract

1279547 N-arylidene erythromycylamine derivatives ELI LILLY & CO 20 Nov 1970 [21 Nov 1969 30 Sept 1970] 55357/70 Heading C2A The invention comprises N-arylidene derivatives of erythromycylamine of Formula I: or of Formula II: wherein R is H or OH and R<SP>1</SP> is phenyl, naphthyl, pyridyl, substituted (phenyl, naphthyl or pyridyl) in which the substituents may be one or more members of the group consisting of C 1 to C 3 alkyl, halo, C 1 to C 3 alkyloxy, lower alkanoyl, hydroxy, carboxy, phenyl, nitro or trifluoromethyl. Formula I represents normal erythromycylamine or erythromycyl B amine derivatives and Formula II the corresponding epi derivatives. The compounds of the invention are effective in curing infections in mammals caused by Gram-positive organisms and may be administered by oral or parenteral methods, at doses such as 25 mg./kg. Pharmaceutical compositions containing the compounds of the invention may be prepared by mixing these with suitable carriers. The compounds of the invention may also be used as washes to control Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms on equipment, furnishings, walls and floors in dental and medical offices and in hospitals. Usually the N-arylidene erythromycylamine is dissolved in water and a surface-active agent added.
