Abstract
1279421 Stamping P CUQ 1 July 1969 [4 July 1968 17 Dec 1968 9 April 1969] 33053/69 Heading B3Q In a process and an apparatus for transforming a cylindrical cupped blank into a hollow metallic part in which the blank 49, Fig. 2, is filled with fluid then subjected to an axial deforming action by means of a jack 53 and a radial deforming action which increases the diameter, the surface area of the blank is maintained constant throughout the transformation process by controlling the volume of fluid within the blank by means of a regulator operated by a cam 114 actuated by the piston 54 of the jack 53, the cam profile being designed in accordance with the curve of the variation of blank volume as a function of decreasing blank height, and finally the blank is calibrated after isolation of the regulator from the fluid in the blank. The cam may be operated by a rack and pinion as shown and the surface co-acts with a transmission to operate the regulator. The transmission may be a mechanical linkage, an oleohydraulic transmission, or a potentiometer coupled through thyristors to an electric motor driving a worm gear attached to the piston of the regulator. In another embodiment the cam may be linear and operate directly on the piston of the regulator. For parts which have several different diameters the axial compression may be carried out in successive stages with multipart dies.
