Abstract
1279389 Trifluoromethyl-nitro-phenylenediamines UNITED STATES BORAX & CHEMICAL CORP 20 Oct 1970 49848/70 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein R 1 and R 3 represent H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aralkyl or aryl and R 2 and R 4 represent alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aralkyl or aryl, or at least one of the pairs R 1 and R 2 or R 3 and R 4 together with the N atom to which they are attached forms a heterocyclic group. They may be obtained by reacting a 2,4-dihalo-5-nitrobenzotrifluoride with one or two primary or secondary amines of the formulµ: R 1 NHR 2 and R 3 NHR 4 . When the two amines are the same the reaction takes place in one step using 4 moles of amine for each mole of 2,4-dihalo-5-nitrobenzotrifluoride; when the two amines are different the reaction takes place in two steps using 2 moles of one amine in the first step and 2 moles of another amine in the second step for each mole of 2,4- dihalo-5-nitrobenzotrifluoride. Examples are given for the production of the compounds. Intermediate 5 - chloro - 2 - nitro - 4 - trifluoromethylanilines are isolated in some examples. The products are useful as herbicides and may be used for the control of grassy weeds in the presence of crops.
