Abstract

1279289 Diaphragm springs FOXBORO CO 28 Oct 1969 [1 Nov 1968] 52723/69 Heading F2S [Also in Divisions G1 G3 and H1] A diaphragm spring consists of a sheet (10) of metal cut out to form a cantilevered tongue 12. The sheet is backed by a rubber diaphragm 16 sealing the gap around the periphery of the tongue 12. A rigid stiffener 29 ensures flexing of the tongue only in the region of the axis 24. Movement of the tongue 12 in response to fluid pressure applied to the underside of the rubber diaphragm can be used to control or actuate an operating device such as a switch (hence the tap 29a). Alternatively the movement of the tongue can be arranged to indicate differential pressures across it to a sensing device which controls a feedback device to re-balance the pressures on either side. The diaphragm spring of Fig. 4 backed by a rubber diaphragm (50, Fig. 8, not shown) has tongues 32, 34, 36, 38 and 40 which are individually responsive to fluid pressure in an alarm system (Fig. 12, not shown) for notifying when a measured condition (e.g. temperature or flow-rate) in an industrial process goes above or below a certain level (see Divisions G1 and G3). Rectangular holes 220 reduce the spring rate of tongues 36 and 40. Tongues 34-40 are restrained by a coil spring (102) or a C-shaped spring (84, Fig. 12).
