Abstract

1278948 Polyvinyl chloride filaments PRODUITS CHIMIQUES PECHINEY-SAINTGOBAIN 9 Oct 1969 [9 Oct 1968] 49616/69 Addition to 1136320 Heading B5B Fibres, filaments, thin mouldings, strips and ribbons are produced by bringing a vinyl chloride homopolymer or copolymer directly into the molten state in the absence of solvents and extruding it at a temperature from 220‹ to 290‹ C. using a rotary plate extrusion device, suitably that described in Specifications 1,104,388 and 1,107,487, in conjunction with conventional spinning or drawing devices. The melt spinning may be effected at a temperature within the range 230‹ to 260‹ C. The polymer used may be a polyvinyl chloride prepared by bulk-polymerization and having an AFNOR viscosity index of 80. It may be extruded at 245‹ C. through a spinneret at 250‹ C. and drawn at a speed of 200 metres per minute at about 170‹ C. The filaments may have a substantially homogeneous structure after swelling in dichlorethane. They may have an extensibility of 1000% at 100‹ C. and a denier of 70. They may have a birefringence # n of about 12 x 10<SP>-3</SP> after having been drawn at 100‹ C.
