Abstract

1278642 Heating platen presses; laminates FIBREGLASS Ltd 27 May, 1970 [4 June, 1969] 28289/69 Headings B5A and B5N. [Also in Divisions D1 and H5] A glass fibre mat coated with phenolic resin is pressed between plates 35, 41 whilst the resin is heat cured. The plates are maintained at a temperature of 400‹ F. by resistance heaters 28, to raise the surface of the mat to at least the minimum curing temperature, whilst the centre of the mat is raised to a higher temperature by dielectric current produced by high frequency voltage applied to plates i.e. electrodes 35, 41 by circuit 50. Contoured products may be produced by shaped electrodes. A laminate is produced by placing on the lower electrode 35 an aluminium foil coated on its upper surface with polyethylene, followed by a glass fibre mat coated with phenolic resin and pressing whilst the upper electrode was heated to 400‹ F., the lower electrode to 310‹ F. and dielectric current passed to cure the interior of the mat. Both surfaces of the mat may be bonded to a facing material (Fig. 5, not shown), and later the mat and the facing material may themselves be laminates, the laminations preferably being carried out simultaneously. The apparatus comprises four vertical rods 18, upon which slide the upper and lower frames 16, 17. Asbestos blocks 43, 44 and sheet 47 insulate platen 40 from frame 16. Electrical resistances 28 heat platen 40 and thus upper aluminium electrode 41, and likewise lower platen and electrode 24, 35. Whilst upper frame 16 is normally clamped in position, lower frame 17 is moved by hydraulic jack 23 between limits set by sleeves 21, 22. Several small mats may be placed on lower electrode 35 to be cured simultaneously. Continuous curing of a coated mat is achieved by passing it between endless conveyer bands formed with non-ferrous material which act as electrodes, or alternatively the conveyer bands pass between fixed electrodes.
