Abstract

1278619 Sorbose by fermentation of sorbitol TANABE SEIYAKU CO Ltd 27 Oct 1969 [25 Oct 1968] 52457/69 Heading C2C [Also in Division C6] Sorbose is prepared from sorbitol by continuous fermentation of a nutrient medium with Acetobacter suboxidans ATCC 621, wherein the nutrient medium and an oxygen-containing gas are fed to, and the fermentation broth and exhaust gas are withdrawn from, a fermentation zone, variations in the rate of transfer of oxygen into the fermentation medium being detected by monitoring the variations in the partial pressure of oxygen in the exhaust gas to provide an error signal which is fed back to control the rate of feed of the nutrient medium and the rate of withdrawal of the fermentation broth to maintain the conditions in the fermentation zone substantially constant. Oxygen in the exhaust gas may be sensed by a membrane oxygen electrode or magnetic oxygen analyser. Fermentations to produce gluconic acid and 2-ketogluconic acid are also mentioned.
