Abstract

1277995 Brazing CAPITAL WIRE CLOTH Ltd 11 June 1970 [12 June 1969] 28325/70 Heading B3R End edges of wire cloth are seamed together by a plasma arc process. An apparatus for effecting the process comprises a plasma arc torch T (Fig. 3) connected to pilot and main arc power supplies and sources of argon for the plasma and argon, 5% hydrogen for shielding. The torch is adjustably mounted on a seaming head H (Fig. 6) allowing its adjustment in height relative to the work. The torch can be pivoted out of its working position by means of a handle 155. A cavity 131 below the seam line co-operates with a slot formed in a wear plate on which the cloth rests, in use, to direct hot gases to the rear side of the work. A ribbon of stainless steel with a gold coating is used to effect the seam; the ribbon is tensioned and guided in the apparatus and, in the process, the gold acts as a solder, flowing around abutting warp ends of the cloth edges. The apparatus includes means for holding and positioning the cloth pieces to be joined (Fig. 10). First ends of the cloth pieces are held in clamps 162 which are connected via springs 163 and chains 164 to an adjacent edge of a seaming table 160. Second ends of the cloth pieces are held in similar clamps 162 connected via spring- balances 165 and chains 165<SP>1</SP> to opposite ends of a lever 166 whose pivot shaft 167 mounts a worm wheel 168 meshing with a worm 169. The latter is on a shaft which can be rotated through an endless cable and pulley arrangement. A microscope M assists in viewing the cloth edges during their correct alignment.
