Abstract
1,142,854. Welding by fusion. CLARKE, CHAPMAN & CO. Ltd. 10 May, 1966 [11 May, 1965], No. 19923/65. Heading B3R. Orbital welding apparatus simultaneously welds two ends of a first tube section or a pair of tube sections to the ends of two further tube sections. In a machine for welding the ends of a return bend to a pair of parallel tubes, the return bend is clamped in mating grooves 8, 9 in a pair of blocks 6, 7 connected by a removable hinge pin 3 and a lock 4, 5. The blocks are provided with cooling water passages connected by a flexible hose 28, and have tracks 12 in which are rotatably retained two pairs of toothed half-rings 13A, 13B; 14A, 14B driven by worm gears 37, 38 on coupled shafts 34, 35. One of each pair of half-rings is provided with a mounting 19 on which is pivotally mounted a gas shielded non-consumable electrode arc welding head 18 spring-loaded inwardly and having a ceramic gas nozzle 24 and a ceramic roller 22 engaging the work. A locating stop is provided for stopping the half-rings in the opening shown in Fig. 1. The block 7 is mounted on a jig for holding the tubes. The welding heads and half-rings are detachable and usable with blocks of different dimensions. A plurality of such machines may be used simultaneously to weld return bends to a bank of tubes. In modifications, the blocks are shaped to clamp a pair of straight or curved tubes or a return bend having non-parallel ends. Where necessary the pairs of half-rings are in inclined planes and the shafts 34, 35 are connected by gears.
