Abstract

1428118 Welding by fusion CLARKE CHAPMAN Ltd 22 Nov 1973 [25 Nov 1972] 54551/72 Heading B3R [Also in Division B4] A self-centring clamping device capable of introduction transversely of workpieces, such as bars or tubes, comprises a gapped body 10 accommodating a workpiece, three angularly spaced jaws 14, 16, 18 each having a multistart scroll formation and slidably mounted in the body so as to be movable into and out of clamping engagement with a workpiece, a gapped scroll-plate (38) mounted in the body and having three multi-start scroll formations permanently engaging respective jaw scroll formations, and means to turn the scroll plate and thereby move the jaws comprising a hand wheel or screw or, as shown, one or two racks 42 engaging a gapped gear (36) attached to the scroll plate. As shown, the racks 42 are actuated by air admitted to cylinders 48 via a three-position valve 50 operable by a lever 52. The jaws are two-start and have keys 24 engaging slide keyways 30 in the body. One of the jaws, viz. 18, near the body gap has a greater width than that of the other two jaws to ensure adequate scroll engagement overlap since only short scroll formations are available for engagement therewith. The scroll formations are "fast", providing 0À125 inch jaw travel for 11 degrees scroll plate movement. The clamp is intended to support an orbital welder (such as described in Specification 1428120. Two clamping devices, e.g. joined by U-shaped frame, could be provided to engage tubes on opposite sides of a tube joint. Other applications include: cutting out damaged tubes from an array (e.g. in heat exchangers), preparing (e.g. grinding) tube ends for welding, aligning tubes for welding, inspection (e.g. of welds) by orbital appliances such as ultrasonic or X-ray, and friction weld flash removal.
