Abstract
1277497 Polymerizing hydrocarbons SHOWA DENKO KK 16 Sept 1969 [19 Sept 1968 22 Oct 1968 24 Dec 1968 23 July 1969 (2) 5 Aug 1969 (2)] 45685/69 Heading C3P Mono-unsaturated alpha-ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbons are polymerized by contact with a catalyst composition comprising: (a) a halide or oxyhalide of titanium, vanadium or zirconium; and (b) a dialuminoxane of the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are each C 1-15 hydrocarbyl groups, R<SP>3</SP> is hydrogen or a C 1-15 hydrocarbyl group and R<SP>4</SP> is hydrogen, a C 1-15 hydrocarbyl group or halogen, with the limitation that when R<SP>4</SP> is halogen, R<SP>3</SP> is not hydrogen; the molar ratio of (a) : (b) being 1 : 0À1 to 1 : 20. Further catalyst components, (c) may be selected from: (i) R n AlHal 3-n wherein R is a C 1-15 hydrocarbyl group, Hal is halogen and n is 1, 1 5 or 2; (ii) an organic compound of one of the following general formulµ wherein X, Y and Z are selected from: hydrogen, hydrocarbyl, alkoxy, amino and N-hydrocarbyl substituted amino, and X and Y when taken together may form a ring, with the limitation that in the first three formulµ not more than two of X, Y and Z can be hydrogen, and in the final formula at least one of X and Y is amino or N-hydrocarbyl substituted amino; (iii) a quaternary ammonium compound wherein R<SP>5</SP>, R<SP>6</SP>, R<SP>7</SP> and R<SP>12</SP> are each C 1-10 hydrocarbyl, two of which when taken together may form a ring which may contain oxygen, and Hal is halogen; (iv) a complex of the formula where M is a metal, other than an alkali metal, or is boron or phosphorus, Hal is halogen, m is the valence of M, j is 1, 2, 3 or 4, and D is a compound selected from wherein X<SP>1</SP>, Y<SP>1</SP> and Z<SP>1</SP> are each C 1-10 hydrocarbyl, two of which when taken together may form a ring, and X<SP>11</SP> and Y<SP>11</SP> are each C 1-10 hydrocarbyl, which when taken together may form a 5-6 membered ring; (v) an ether of the formula R<SP>1</SP>OR<SP>11</SP> or a liquid polyether comprising units wherein R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>11</SP> and R<SP>111</SP> are each C 1-10 hydrocarbyl groups and R<SP>1111</SP> is hydrogen or C 1-10 hydrocarbyl; (vi) a compound of the formula or wherein Q is silicon, aluminium or boron, R<SP>8</SP> and R<SP>9</SP> are each C 1-10 hydrocarbyl or acyl groups which when taken together may form a ring, R<SP>10</SP> is a C 1-10 hydrocarbyl group, k is the valence of Q, p is 1, 2 or 3, r is 2 or 3, and s is 1 or 2; the molar ratio of (a) : (b) : (c) being 1 : (0À1- 20) : (0À1-20). Extensive lists of suitable compounds (a), (b) and (c) are given. Examples describe the polymerization of ethylene, propylene, styrene and 4-methyl-pentene-1.
