Abstract

1276522 Control circuits for discharge lamps MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 21 July 1969 [23 July 1968 14 Aug 1968] 36647/69 Heading H2H [Also in Division H4] A discharge lamp has one hot negative electrode and two positive electrodes, an auxiliary discharge being generated between the negative electrode and one of the positive electrodes. A control arrangement operates to apply an intermittent D.C. voltage across the negative electrode and the other positive electrode in order to modulate the light output. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5, the brilliance of a lamp 31 is controlled by pulse amplitude modulation. An abnormal glow discharge is maintained between the heated cathode 32 and auxiliary anode 34 by a source 45. The main discharge between the cathode 32 and main anode 33 is controlled by a modulator circuit 43, the input for which may be a video signal in a television system. An input pulse is stored in a capacitor 38 and amplified by transistors 35, 36 so that lighting current can flow to the lamp from source 49 through the transistor 36 and a brilliance control resistor 44. The lamp is switched off by applying a gating pulse to a thyristor 39 which then discharges the capacitor 38. Several lamps of different colours may be combined into a unit in a display device and modulated at high frequencies. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), the duration of the main discharge is controlled by the height of the input pulse, the arrangement including an R.C. time constant circuit, an amplifier and a Zener diode clipper. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the main discharge is controlled by a series combination of a thyristor and a switching transistor connected across the main electrodes and a D.C. source.
