1276321 Dialkyl tin diiodides and oxide KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 23 June 1969 [25 June 1968 21 Aug 1968 19 Sept 1968 (2) 27 Sept 1968 2 Oct 1968 8 Oct 1968 15 Oct 1968 (3) 18 Oct 1968] 31587/69 Heading C2J Dialkyl tin diiodides are prepared by reacting powdered tin having a particle size of less than 50 mesh with an excess of an alkyl iodide in the presence of an organic nitrogen containing compound as catalyst. The alkyl iodide preferably contains from 8 to 24 carbon atoms and the molar ratio of tin to iodide should be between 2À2 : 1 and 4 :1. The catalyst is preferably present to the extent of 0À001-0À5 moles per gram atom of tin. The preferred reaction temperature is 130-230‹ C. The catalyst is preferably given by where X is cyclohexyl, phenyl, benzyl hexahydrobenzyl or derivatives thereof, Y is H or (when X is cyclohexyl, benzyl or derivatives thereof) an alkyl group containing from 1-8 carbon atoms, and n is 1, 2 or 3. Other preferred catalysts are any primary, secondary, tertiary amine or a quarternary amine salt, a compound containing a heterocyclic nitrogen, an S-triazine, a lactam, a hydrazine derivative, guanidine or a derivative thereof, an amino acid or derivative thereof. Hydrolysis of the iodide, preferably in 20% alkali at 80-90‹ C. for about 2 hours, yields the corresponding dialkyl tin oxide.
