Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1026402/C2/1> wherein R1 is H or halogen or C1- 4 alkyl, R2 is H or C1- 4 alkyl, R3 is C5- 20 alkyl, n is 0 when Z is CH2 and R2 is alkyl and n is 1, 2 or 3 when Z is CH2, O or S, their acid addition salts and the preparation thereof by reacting a guanidine R4NHC(NR5)NHR6 or a salt thereof with a compound R7X wherein one of R4, R5, R6 is the group p-R1-C6H4-Z-(CH2)n-, one of the remaining 3 symbols is R2, one of the still remaining 2 symbols is R3 and the last symbol is H, and X is a reactive atom or group; or an O-substituted isourea or S-substituted isothiourea or salts thereof, or a cyanamide or a guanidine or a salt thereof is reacted with NH3 or a salt or a derivative thereof and optionally the guanidine so produced is converted into the acid addition salt of another acid. The following starting materials are also prepared: 2-phenoxyethyl- and 2-p-chlorophenoxyethyl - isothiocyanates; N - hexadecyl - N1 - 2 - phenoxyethyl-, 2-phenoxyethyl-, N-hexadecyl-N1-methyl-, N-octadecyl-N1-2-phenoxyethyl-, N-dodecyl-N1-methyl-, 2-p-chlorophenoxyethyl-, N-methyl-N1-(3-phenylpropyl)-, N-benzyl-N1-octadecyl-, N-octyl-N1-2-phenoxyethal- and N-pentyl-N1-2-phenoxyethyl-isothioureas and their S-methyl thiouranium salts. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise the quanidines of the invention and an acceptable carrier therefor. The compositions, which have anthelmintic and antiprotozoal activity may be formulated as tablets or capsules, powders or granules for administration as a draft or drench, or as a suspension.
