Abstract

1276246 Brakes VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISEN- & STAHLWERKE AG 27 Jan 1970 [11 Feb 1969] 3815/70 Heading F2E In an apparatus for the automatic operation of the locking brake of tiltable metallurgical vessels and which comprises a control element to which a mains supply voltage is applied and which initiates operation of a brake release device in response to failure of the mains supply voltage, there is provided an electrically operated brake-releasing device 8, e.g. a solenoid motor-driven or electromagnetic-hydraulic device, for the brake and an emergency electric power source independent of the mains and comprising a storage battery 11 and a converter 14 for transforming the battery current into a current equivalent to the mains supply current so that failure of the mains supply current causes the device 8 to be energized by the emergency electric power source and the control element to operate the brake-releasing device so as to release the brake for a period of time in which the vessel is returned to a predetermined position. As shown, a motor 2 drives, by a shaft, a transmission for tilting the vessel, the shaft carrying a brake disc 1 engageable by shoes 3 mounted on levers 4 connected by a linkage 5 operable by a lever 6 which is acted on by a spring 7 and by the device 8, the latter being normally energized by the mains 10. Upon failure of the mains supply a mainsdependent switch 13 connects the converter 14 to the battery 11 and to device 8 to release the brake. When the vessel has reached a predetermined position a switching cam 16 connected to the vessel actuates, by a cam follower 17, a switch 18 which disconnects the converter 14 so that the device 8 is de-energized and the brake is re-applied by the spring 7; alternatively, the switch is replaced by a timer or limit switches. When normal voltage has been reestablished in the mains 10, the switches operate to disconnect the battery and converter.
