1276214 Antistatic polyester composition TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 24 March 1970 [2 April 1969 5 April 1969 (2) 22 Sept 1969] 14284/70 Heading C3R An antistatic composition based on a linear polyester, preferably with at least 80% of its repeating units based on terephthalic acid, comprises also a polyamide-polyether block copolymer and a metal salt of a sulphonic acid. The block copolymer comprises 0À2 to 5À0% of the weight of the composition, the polyether units comprising 0À1 to 2À0% of the total weight and 20 to 75% of the weight of the block copolymer itself. The relative viscosity of the block copolymer measured in o-chlorophenol is preferably 2À0 to 3À1 and may be controlled by incorporation of monofunctional acids or amines or by solid-phase polymerization prior to formation of the composition. The metal salt is preferably the Li, Na or K salt of an alkyl- or alkylaryl-sulphonic acid having 8 to 19 carbon atoms and should comprise 0À01 to 5% by weight of the composition. It is preferably absorbed into the solid block copolymer by means of a suitable solvent before mixing with the polyester. Coloration of the composition may be reduced by including also phosphorous acid or a derivative thereof such as a metal phosphite or a phosphite ester e.g. in an amount of 0À001 to 2À0% of the weight of the composition.
