Abstract

1275971 Pigment dispersions CITIES SERVICE CO 20 March 1969 [22 March 1968 29 Nov 1968] 14808/69 Heading B1V [Also in Divisions C1 and C4] A process for the production of a pigment dispersion in an organic medium suitable for use as a paint, printing ink or coating composition, comprises adding pigment to an organic medium and surfactant, with mixing the rate of pigment addition being such as to permit wetting out of the pigment in the medium, and being continued at least until a high shear mass is obtained. The high shear mass is then worked e.g. agitated or rolled to break down agglomerates to form a uniform dispersion. Additional organic medium may be added to reduce the viscosity. The medium may be a blend of media. The pigment may be inorganic or organic (specified). The surfactant may be cationic, anionic, non-ionic or a mixture and may be water or oil soluble or water dispersable, e.g. tall oil fatty acid, a polyphosphoric ester of a higher alcohol torol diethanolamine, a polyethylene polyamine condensate of castor oil, soya lecithin or an organic titanate comprising a polyhydroxy stearate. The organic medium may be a hydrocarbon, alcohol, ester or ketone. Plastics and resin binders may be added to the dispersion as also may be plasticizers and non-settling aids when the dispersions are to be used as a coating composition.
