Abstract

1275570 Metallized briquettes for malsing iron ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 26 Aug 1969 [11 Oct 1968] 42373/69 Heading C7D Compactions comprise particulate reduced iron ore at least 80% metallized, have porosities of 4-15% and consist of at least 75% Fe and lower Fe oxides with no more than 25% of gauge and other impurities. The compactions are made by reducing oxidic ore particles of size 10-10, 000Á, averaging 5-200Á, with reducing gases (e. g. CO and/or H 2 ) in staged high temperature fluidized beds to the required metallization, and compacting the product at 1250-1600‹ F. with a pressure exceeding 20 tons/sq. in. to obtain the required porosity (e. g. in a briquetter). The compactions may be added to the slag overlying a steel melt (e. g. in an arc furnace) as a substitute for pig iron or scrap, the density of the compact being such that it sinks through the slag but not to the bottom of the steel melt.
