1275559 Road barrier; operating mechanism ROTAX Ltd 16 Sept 1969 [26 Oct 1968] 50913/68 Headings E1G and E2M A road barrier for controlling traffic comprises at least one vertically slidable member, e.g. a horizontal bar or a retractable vertical post, actuated by at least one linear electric motor. As shown, a horizontal bar 10 is rigidly secured to an armature 14 slidably mounted in a slotted vertical pillar 11, the armature co-operating with a flat or tubular linear electric motor 15 mounted in the pillar. A counterweight 18 is attached to the armature by a cable 16 passing over a pulley 17. When the bar has been raised to its "open" position it may be retained by a latch, e.g. a spring- loaded latch releasable by a solenoid in the motor circuit. Alternatively, the bar may be lowered into a channel in the ground (Fig. 5, not shown). The armature may be formed as a flat steel plate with an aluminium facing, or as a rod; it is preferably coupled to one or more vertical tubular dash-pots. In a further embodiment, the horizontal bar is secured to a flat motor which slides vertically in the pillar on guide rollers and co-operates with a stationary armature, which may be formed by the rear wall of the pillar. Current is supplied by conductor rails or a flexible cable, and the motor is coupled to a dash-pot and a counterweight. Instead of a horizontal bar, the barrier may comprise vertical posts retractable into housings sunk in the ground, linear electric motors being located in the housings, (Fig. 6 not shown).
