Abstract
1275050 Fans EDGAR ALLEN AEREX Ltd 20 Aug 1969 [22 Aug 19681 40147/68 Heading F1C An impeller, e. g. of a fan for a cooling tower, comprises blades 6, Fig. 1, each mounted for angular adjustment sequentially into any of two or more operative pitch settings on repetition of changes of fan speed through minimum values. When the fan is inoperative the blade assumes the position shown, wherein it is releasably held against angular movement by a spring pawl 14 and is biased towards the impeller axis by a spring 12. When the fan is operated, the centrifugal effects move the blade away from the impeller axis and cause an arm 16, extending radially from blade root 7, to move from the position shown in Fig. 3 into engagement with a lobe 20 of a two-position rocker 19, causing the rocker to pivot into the alternative position to that shown whereby it moves the arm and blade angularly and locks them in an operative pitch setting, Fig. 4 (not shown). Subsequent shut-down of the fan causes the blade to move back towards the impeller axis, causing the arm to follow cam wall 24 back to notch 18 without disturbing the rocker. Further operation of the fan therefore causes the arm to engage the other lobe 21 and results in pivoting of the rocker and thus angular adjustment of the blade in the opposite direction to another operative pitch setting. Thus the particular operative pitch setting required is obtained merely by switching on and off a constant speed driving motor or by otherwise effecting a substantial change in fan speed through a minimum value. The value of the operative pitch settings may be adjusted by angularly adjusting a bracket 11 about the blade axis as by bolts (27), Fig. 2 (not shown). The operative pitch settings mayboth be positive, or one may be negative to produce flow reversal. The rocker is releasably held in either of its two positions by a spring pawl (22). In an alternative embodiment, the rocker is omitted and the arm instead follows a circulation cam track, Figs. 6 to 9 (not shown). In another embodiment, the radial arm is replaced by an arm, collar or part-collar which extends axially from the blade root and engages a coaxial cam having, e.g. a saw-tooth track.
