Abstract

1,274,653. Oxidation of hydrocarbons. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 17 July, 1969 [4 Sept., 1968], No. 42041/68. Heading C2C. Alcohols and phenols are produced by reacting a hydrocarbon, containing the grouping in the vapour phase with oxygen and an alcohol, e.g. CH 3 OH as a source of hydroxyl and/or hydroperoxy radicals in a reactor, suitably constructed of silica or alumina, whose internal surface has been subjected to a treatment adapted to maintain the hydroxyl and/or hydroperoxy radicals produced in the free condition, such treatment comprising (a) washing the internal surface several times with hydrogen fluoride or nitric acid or (b) coating the surface with boric acid or potassium monohydrogen phosphate or (c) ageing the reactor by passing the reaction mixture through it many times. The process is suitable for the oxidation of methane, benzene and toluene; the production of phenol from benzene being exemplified.
